Learning English in Singapore: English is Enough
For most international students, English is enough for study and daily life in Singapore. Mandarin can be useful in some social, cultural and professional settings, but it is not a general requirement for living or studying there.
Singapore is not the only Asian destination offering English-taught education, so that claim has been removed from this guide.
Singapore’s language landscape
Singapore’s Constitution recognises four official languages:
- English
- Malay
- Mandarin
- Tamil
Malay is the national language. English is the common working language and is widely used in government, business, schools and public signage. Singapore’s bilingual education policy also supports the learning of mother-tongue languages.
See the government’s official overview of languages and daily life.
Is university study in English?
English is widely used as the medium of instruction in Singapore higher education. However, “the university teaches in English” does not remove program-level requirements.
Before applying, verify:
- the official language of instruction for the exact degree;
- whether your previous education satisfies an English exemption;
- accepted tests and minimum scores;
- whether individual modules use another language; and
- the standard required for placements, teaching practice or professional registration.
Do not assume that conversational English alone is enough for academic writing, presentations and group projects.
Standard English and Singlish
In classrooms and formal work, you will generally use standard academic or professional English. In daily conversation, you may hear Singlish—an informal local variety influenced by English, Malay, Mandarin, Chinese varieties and Tamil.
You do not need to imitate Singlish. Listening improves with time, and it is fine to ask someone to repeat or rephrase. Avoid treating Singlish as “incorrect English”; it carries local identity and context, while formal settings call for a different register.
Does Mandarin help?
Mandarin can be useful for:
- speaking with some friends, neighbours and customers;
- understanding parts of Chinese-Singaporean cultural life;
- roles involving Mandarin-speaking markets; and
- travel or work in other Mandarin-speaking environments.
But not everyone in Singapore speaks Mandarin, and many Singaporeans use Malay, Tamil, other languages or English at home. Do not assume ethnicity predicts a person’s preferred language.
For most international students, practical priorities are:
- strong academic English;
- respectful cross-cultural communication;
- the language needs of the target industry; and
- optional Mandarin study if it serves a real personal or career goal.
